INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
International Visitors are frequently invited to the United States for academic activities, which may include lectures, seminars, and collaborative research. Many of these visitors are not eligible for Social Security Numbers and must apply for an
Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
to receive reimbursement or payment for these activities.
IF YOU HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR AN ITIN NUMBER
.
To assist visitors to Texas A&M University, the IRS has designated the International Faculty & Scholars as a Certified Acceptance Agent, for the purpose of receiving ITIN applications and submitting them to IRS.
In order to apply for an ITIN, the foreign national will need to come to International Faculty & Scholars and complete a W-7 application. Please make sure that the foreign nationals bring his/her passport and I-94 card. International Faculty & Scholars staff will review the application, identification documentation and complete the processing by submitting the form to the IRS.
Typically, it takes 6-8 weeks for IRS to process the application. When the original card is received, International Services will contact the foreign national or their department for pickup. Additional tax questions that a foreign national may have should be directed to University Payroll Services at 979-845-2711.
You may find the W-7 form on the IRS website but will still need to bring it to the International Services office for signature before mailing to IRS.
If you have any further questions, please call (979) 862-1719.
